Donâ€™t pass bad habits down the generations! Can you remember your mum telling you to go to the toilet â€˜just in caseâ€™? It was usually a command that all the family obeyed before leaving the house. What about those other words of wisdom â€˜Itâ€™s a good idea to stop and start when youâ€™re weeing, it helps to strengthen your pelvic floor musclesâ€™?
YourÂ mumâ€™s werenâ€™t doing youÂ any favours. Going to the toilet â€˜just in caseâ€™ can cause a bladder to become smaller and less able to hold normal amounts of urine. You mayÂ actually finish up needingÂ to wee more often! Stopping and starting the flow of urine can effect the bladder reflexes, leading to incomplete emptying.
When you chat about periods include some information about good bladder and pelvic floor health. Women often put up with bladder problems for years because they are too embarrassed. This is a great opportunity to emphasise the point that bladder and bowel problems really common and often easy to cure.Â Make sure the information you give her is up to date, avoid those old wives tales!
You should look after your own pelvic health so you can set a good example:
- Remember all the recommended lifestyle advice such as drinking two litres of fluid a day, aiming to wee every three hours during the day and avoiding too much caffeine
- Sit and relax fully when passing urine. Donâ€™t hover over the toilet as your pelvic floor wonâ€™t relax fully and your bladder may not empty.
- If you have an overactive bladder and experience the symptoms of having to wee often (urgency and possible occasional leaks when you donâ€™t reach the toilet on time) watch for similar signs in your daughter. An overactive bladder can be passed down the generations
Learn about your pelvic floor
Itâ€™s unlikely your daughter will have â€˜stress incontinenceâ€™ – the leaking small amounts when youÂ cough and sneeze. This is something youÂ tend to develop after childbirth. Girls with overactive bladders are more likely to hold their pelvic floor muscles tight, in an attempt to control leaks.
Chat about pelvic floor awareness by practising tightening â€˜as if trying to stop passing windâ€™ as well as focusing on a full release.
